Why BetSorceress measures itself against the closing line

Hit rate is betting's best-known number and its worst measure. It tells you what happened, not whether the decision was good. A hundred picks at odds of 1.30 hit seventy times and still lose money. That is why BetSorceress shows, for every pick, the closing line and the number derived from it: closing line value, or CLV. It tells you whether the pick was chosen well – regardless of whether it won.

What the closing line is

The closing line is the price at which a bookmaker closes the market just before kick-off. It is the market's last and most accurate estimate, because everything has had time to affect it: line-ups, injuries, weather, professional money and public money. Research and the bookmakers' own practice agree: the closing line predicts results better than any earlier price. If we could know only one number about a match, it would be the closing line.

What CLV is

CLV compares the odds at which BetSorceress published a pick with the closing line. If we published at 2.00 and the market closed at 1.85, we got a price that was no longer available at kick-off. The market moved our way. If the closing line was 2.15, the market moved against us: we paid too much.

The number is calculated in probabilities. Odds of 2.00 correspond to 50 %, odds of 1.85 to about 54 %. If the market's final view is 54 % and we got a price worth 50 %, we hold roughly four points of closing line value. BetSorceress shows this number on every pick as soon as the match has started – before the result is known.

Why it beats hit rate

A single match is a lottery. The goalkeeper saves 45 shots, the ball hits the post, the referee sees a penalty that never was. One result is one evening's chance, and the hit rate of twenty picks swings wildly on luck alone. The closing line, by contrast, is the combined estimate of thousands of bettors and bookmakers, and it moves on information, not fortune.

If our picks beat the closing line consistently, we are getting better prices than the market eventually offers. Over time that is the only way to win, because the bookmaker's margin eats everything that is not genuine price advantage. If our picks lose to the closing line, the hit rate can look fine for a month and collapse the next – because it was luck.

This is also why BetSorceress judges its lanes in samples of a hundred picks, not a week's results. A hundred picks is enough to separate skill from luck with CLV, but not yet with hit rate alone.

What the number does not say

CLV is not a promise. Positive CLV means we got a better price than the market, not that the pick will win. Negative CLV does not mean the pick was wrong – sometimes the market moves against us for a reason nobody could know at publication. The measure's value is in the aggregate: the average across dozens and hundreds of picks, by lane and by sport.

There is a second limit. The closing line is the best estimate when the market is liquid. Premier League and NHL closing lines are sharp because millions have been staked on them. A closing line in a small league or a player market is less precise, which is why BetSorceress tracks CLV by league tier as well.

How BetSorceress uses it

For every pick we publish the opening odds, the closing line and the CLV – including when the number is negative. The archive shows them by day, by lane and by sport. When a lane loses to the closing line consistently, that is our signal to change or close it – and we have done so. When a lane beats the closing line but loses on results, we wait, because we know which of the two numbers will turn.

For a subscriber the number is a tool for your own review. If you play BetSorceress picks, compare the odds you got with the closing line. If you regularly get a worse price than the published one, you are too late or at the wrong bookmaker, and sooner or later that shows in the results.

In short

Hit rate describes the past; the closing line describes the quality of the decision. Positive CLV over a hundred picks is the strongest evidence that selections are better than the market. That is why BetSorceress makes it public – on every pick, every day.
