There are selections for the afternoon coupon from four sports: a Women's Basketball World Cup knockout game, a Liiga round, the opening round of the Veikkausliiga Championship Series and a US Open quarter-final. The odds are indicative figures at the time of retrieval and may change. There are no settled tips yet.
Hungary–Japan – Hungary to win (incl. overtime) @ 2.06
Hungary finished the group stage with two consecutive wins: Nigeria were beaten 71–67 and South Korea 82–73. Japan, meanwhile, lost to Germany 58–74 and Spain 59–79, with their only win coming by a 102–97 scoreline against Mali. In the physical defensive play of the knockout stage, Hungary's balance in recent matches looks better than the market assessment.
Dorka Juhász has been Hungary's key advantage close to the basket with an average of 12,3 rebounds per game and a tournament efficiency rating of 22,0. Japan can turn the situation around with their three-point shooting, but their shooting form has varied considerably. Odds of 2.06 imply a probability of around 48,5 per cent; my estimate for a Hungary win is around 53 per cent.
HPK–Ilves – Ilves to win (incl. overtime and shootout) @ 1.89
Both started the Liiga season with a win and a loss. Ilves secured a 2–0 win over Lukko in Rauma before a 1–5 defeat to Ässät, while HPK beat Jukurit 4–1 and lost 3–5 to HIFK. The sample size is small, but Ilves have already shown that they can also play a tight away match.
Ilves have more depth in their line-up, particularly in defence and in the goaltending department, where the pairing of Christoffer Rifalk and Mantas Armalis provides options. In addition, Ilves won all four head-to-head meetings last season. The break-even percentage for odds of 1.89 is around 52,9; I estimate the probability of an Ilves win, including overtime, at around 56 per cent.
IF Gnistan–KuPS – KuPS to win @ 1.95
KuPS enter the Championship Series at the top of the table and have won both previous meetings with Gnistan this season 1–0. The Kuopio side have now had an exceptionally beneficial match-free week after a demanding run of European fixtures, so their recovery situation is better than in many rounds during the summer.
Gnistan have been in good form, but their attacking resources changed just before the match as Adeleke Akinyemi moved to Neftçi Baku. KuPS's defensive structure has kept Gnistan scoreless twice, and the rested away side gain a clear tactical advantage from this. Unibet's 1.95 implies a threshold of around 51,3 per cent; my estimate is 56 per cent.
Frances Tiafoe–Alex Michelsen – Tiafoe to win @ 1.57
Tiafoe arrives in the quarter-final in strong tournament form. After a five-set opening match, he has won nine sets in a row and most recently knocked out Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. In addition to his serve and forehand, an effective drop shot has brought variety to his game, which can disrupt Michelsen's rhythm.
The head-to-head record is 2–0 to Tiafoe, and both wins have come in straight sets. Michelsen's backhand and ball control make the match challenging, but Tiafoe's movement, experience of the latter rounds in New York and current versatility carry more weight. Odds of 1.57 imply a probability of around 63,7 per cent; I estimate Tiafoe's chances of winning at around 68 per cent.
